What is Diabetes?

The inability of human body to control blood sugar levels due to insufficient or abnormal amount of insulin in blood stream is said to be diabetes. Genetics and environmental factors such as obesity and lack of exercise are said to play vital roles in the cause of diabetes.
Human body gets energy from Glucose(blood sugar); which in turn comes from the carbohydrate food that we eat. Glucose is released into the blood stream and is converted to energy by body cells. The absorption of glucose is controlled by insulin, a hormone secreted by pancreas. Inadequate or defective insulin secretion or insulin resistance results in abnormal level of glucose in the blood leading to diabetes. Some times this excess sugar is driven away through urine. Hence this disease got its name “diabetes” meaning “Sweet Urine“.
