Type I Diabetes Mellitus is caused by inadequate amount of insulin secretion. Diabetes of this nature is found mainly in children. Juvenile Diabetes occurs due to the destruction of insulin producing beta cells of the islets of Langerhans in Pancreas.
Any disorder to self immune system of human body results in the generation of harmful and unwanted antibodies. This in turn may destroy the islet cell proteins and insulin in pancreas leading to reduced insulin secretion to the blood stream.
Childhood diabetes or juvenile-onset diabetes is characterized by deficiency of insulin. Sensitivity and responsiveness to insulin by the body cells are quite normal. Deficit amount of insulin in the body may later pave way for major illnesses such as ketosis and diabetic ketoacidosis. This may result in prolonged unconsciousness or coma and eventually death.
Type one diabetes comprises of only 10% of total reported cases in developed countries.
The important treatment available for Type I diabetes is replacement of insulin. This will help in maintaining the blood sugar level close to normal.
