Diagnosis of Diabetes Mellitus
In case an individual develops any of the symptoms of Type 1 Diabetes or Type 2 Diabetes or Gestational Diabetes patient should undergo the following tests :
Blood Glucose Test
- Random blood glucose - Sample of blood is obtained at any time of the day and a glucose level above 200 mg/dL indicates any of the diabetes mellitus types, when associated with typical symptoms of each.
- Fasting blood glucose - Sample of blood is obtained after around 8 hours of fasting, usually early morning before breakfast. If the fasting bloods glucose level is 126 mg/dL or higher then the individual has Diabetes Mellitus.
- Oral glucose tolerance test (OGTT) - Initially fasting blood sugar is obtained. Then the person’s blood level is noted every 30 minutes for the next two hours after having a sweet sugary beverage. If the blood glucose level is less than 140 mg/dL then he is normal. Otherwise if blood glucose level is greater than 200 mg/dL then he has Diabetes Mellitus.
Urine sugar Test - Presence of excess glucose in urine suggests Diabetes Mellitus.
Diagnosis of Type One Diabetes
In addition to above mentioned tests, Urine Ketone test is conducted to expose Type 1 Diabetes.
Urine ketones - Ketones will be present in urine if excessive amount of fat in the body is broken down for gaining energy. This happens mostly due to the inadequacy of insulin. Hence checking for ketones will reveal Type 1 Diabetes.
Diagnosis of Type Two Diabetes
Symptoms of Type 2 Diabetes become seemingly noticeable only after a long time. Hence only by conducting glucose tests, the existence of diabetes can be revealed.
Diagnosis of Pre-Diabetes
There are no evident symptoms for pre-diabetes. Though the following tests may reveal if you have pre-diabetes:
- Fasting Plasma Glucose Test (FPG): Individual is suffering from Impaired Fasting Glucose if the fasting blood glucose level is between 100 and 125 mg/dL.
- Oral Glucose Tolerance Test (OGTT): Individual is suffering from Impaired Glucose Tolerance if he has blood glucose level between 140 and 199 mg/dL two hours after conducting an oral glucose tolerance test.
If these tests say that you have either Impaired Fasting Glucose or Impaired Glucose Tolerance then you are said to have pre-diabetes.
